Revealed during Sony’s State of Play, Project Windless is KRAFTON’s latest swing at premium, single-player spectacle — and it’s aiming for something colossal. The newly announced open-world action RPG is in development at KRAFTON Montréal Studio and is set within the universe of The Bird That Drinks Tears, the landmark Korean fantasy series by author Lee Yeong-do. Rather than directly adapting the novels, Project Windless travels back roughly 1,500 years to a largely unexplored mythic age — a time when legends were still being written in blood.
Built in Unreal Engine 5, the game promises a non-linear, player-driven structure where alliances, wars, and political tensions shift according to your choices. Exploration, faction dynamics, and real-time combat all feed into a continent-spanning conflict that evolves around you.
Play as the Hero King
You step into the role of the Hero King — a towering Rekon warrior. The Rekon are humanoid bird beings known for their overwhelming strength, and your character wields twin star-forged blades capable of carving through swathes of enemies at once.
This isn’t a distant, command-from-above war simulator. You’re in the thick of it — cutting through dozens of foes, facing massive creatures head-on, and rallying allied forces as battles escalate. As your legend grows, so too does your influence, uniting Humans, Rekon, Nhaga, and Tokkebi under shifting banners.
Warfare at Scale
At the core of Project Windless is what KRAFTON calls “Mass Technology” — a system designed to render thousands of soldiers and enormous creatures clashing simultaneously across dynamic battlefields.
Combat is fully real-time and skill-driven, blending one-versus-many action with tactical awareness. The promise is personal mastery set against the scale of full-scale warfare — less spectator, more architect of chaos.
“From the start, we asked ourselves what it really means to play a legendary figure in a fantasy world,” said Patrik Méthé, Head of KRAFTON Montréal Studio and Creative Director. “For us, that meant giving players real agency, not just in combat, but in how wars unfold, how alliances are formed, and how history is written. Project Windless is built around the idea that legend is not something you observe, it is something you actively create through play.”
A Global Production
Development is led by KRAFTON Montréal Studio in collaboration with teams in Pangyo, South Korea — combining North American AAA production with worldbuilding rooted in Korean mythological tradition.
KRAFTON has also released a first Developer Diary offering insight into the game’s creative direction and philosophy.
Notably, Project Windless is being built as a premium single-player experience — no multiplayer, no live service hooks. Just myth, war, and the weight of becoming a legend.
The game is currently in development for PC and consoles, with further details — including a release window — to be announced later.
