SQUARE ENIX has quietly cracked open the doors to Midgar once again. A free demo for Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is now live on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox on PC, offering players a chance to revisit (or experience for the first time) one of the most meticulously reworked RPGs of the modern era. Better still, progress carries over to the full release when it launches in January.

The demo drops players straight into the iconic opening act: Cloud Strife, hired sword with a massive blade and even larger emotional baggage, joins Avalanche in a desperate assault on a Shinra Mako Reactor. It’s the same mission that burned itself into players’ memories back in 1997, now reimagined with cinematic scale, real-time combat, and enough visual polish to make Midgar feel oppressive, alive, and deeply unwell. Completing the demo also unlocks bonus items — Revival Earrings and a Survival Set — for use in the full game.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is the expanded edition of 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake, bundling the main campaign with Episode INTERmission, a slick side story starring Wutai ninja Yuffie Kisaragi. Her mission runs parallel to the main plot, offering a fresh perspective on Midgar and a more agile, ability-driven combat style that contrasts nicely with Cloud’s heavier approach.

For newcomers, this remains one of the most approachable entry points the series has ever had. For veterans, it’s a bold, occasionally controversial reworking of sacred material — one that trades strict fidelity for emotional texture, spectacle, and modern pacing. Either way, it’s still unmistakably Final Fantasy VII: corporate villainy, eco-terrorism, existential dread, and swords that defy all known laws of ergonomics.

Pre-orders for the full game are now open, with a few incentives dangling in front of early adopters. Digital pre-orders on Switch 2 and Xbox platforms include the original Final Fantasy VII for a limited time — a neat bit of historical symmetry. Xbox players can dive into that immediately, while Switch 2 owners will gain access on launch day. Meanwhile, physical pre-orders on Nintendo Switch 2 come with a Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy Play Booster, while supplies last.

The release also marks another step in SQUARE ENIX’s ongoing effort to spread the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy beyond its original platforms. With Intergrade now heading to Switch 2 and Xbox, the full saga — including its still-in-development third and final chapter — is firmly positioned as a multi-platform event rather than a gated nostalgia piece.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade demo is available now for Switch 2 and Xbox.

Midgar awaits — again.

The full game launches January 22, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox on PC.

I've been gaming since the days of the Amstrad. Huge RPG fan. Planescape: Torment tops my list, but if a game tells a good story, I'm interested. Absolutely not a fanboy of any specific console or PC - the proof is in the gaming pudding. Also, I like cake.
