Marvel’s Wolverine is on its way from developer Insomniac Games. Announced via a short teaser during the PlayStation Showcase 2021 on Thursday, the game will be exclusive to PlayStation consoles.

“So many of the Insomniac team are such huge fans of the character,” says head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations Ryan Schneider in a post on the PlayStation Blog. And despite Wolverine and Spider-Man being very different heroes, the developer does see a connection between the two: “Both heroes feel deeply compelled to defend people who are less able to do so”.

Arguably the biggest surprise from the entire streamed conference — especially when you consider Insomniac has delivered three high quality PlayStation exclusive games practically back to back — the trailer sees the Marvel anti-hero sat at a bar before brandishing his signature adamantium claws.

Marvel’s Wolverine is a standalone game — so throw your PlayStation Marvel Universe theories out of the window — and will be directed by Brian Horton and Cameron Christian who lead development of Spider-Man: Miles Morales. “The goal here is to not only respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular,” says Schneider, “but also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit”.

The game is described as “very early in development,” but Schneider promises that the team at Insomniac is “creating something truly special”.  You can watch the trailer below.

Marvel’s Wolverine was announced alongside another Marvel project from Insomniac Games — Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
