SIFU wears its influences on its sleeve. Emulating the hard hitting, fast-paced style of modern martial arts movies, the latest game from developer Sloclap — famous for another martial arts heavy game in Absolver — certainly looks the part.

Fluidly moving through areas, taking down enemies using improvised weapons, the environment, as well as your fists and feet, we can only hope it matches its style with substance. The night club setting in the trailer (below) looks like something out of a slick modern kung-fu movie or perhaps even John Wick

“Careful positioning and clever use of the environment to your advantage are key to your survival,” says the game’s marketing material and that certainly seems to be the case. Appearing not unlike Hotline Miami meets an Akham challenge room from Rocksteady's trilogy, I’m really interested about how this feels to play.

Furthermore, the story and overarching time mechanic of SIFU has me keeping a close eye on it as well. Whilst the fights seem to be front and centre, there’s a story of revenge in here — one that may even consume the player and could perhaps bring in rogue-lite elements. As seen in the game’s announcement trailer our protagonist appears to age with every defeat. “Time will be the price you pay”.

There’s no date on SIFU just yet, but we know the game is coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC. Perhaps we’ll hear more at the upcoming PlayStation presentation that Geoff Keighley said was “weeks away”?
