Returnal Launch Trailer Showcases PlayStation Studios' Bullet Hell Roguelike

April 28, 2021

Returnal, the first big PlayStation Studios game of 2021, will launch on April 30th. Ahead of the release, PlayStation and developer Housemarque have dropped a launch trailer for the game which can be seen below:

The new trailer gives us another glimpse at the sci-fi world of Returnal and its fast-paced, arcade inspired combat. We can see protagonist Selene dodging her way through obstacles and taking on enemies at a breakneck pace.

Brisk bullet hell style combat has been a staple of Housemarque’s games from the beginning, with the developer coming to prominence with acclaimed titles like Super Stardust HD and the PS4 launch title Resogun. Combining this with roguelike elements and what appears to be a strong focus on narrative, Returnal could be Housemarque’s big push towards the AAA space — something the team has made known before.

Whilst Returnal is a PlayStation Studios title, Housemarque itself is not a part of Sony’s first-party stable of developers. Regardless, the game is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated PlayStation exclusives of the year.
