Metroid Dread will become the first new 2D Metroid game in 19 years when it releases on October 8th 2021. The game was officially revealed during Nintendo's E3 2021 Direct presentation on Tuesday.

The game appears to be every bit a classic Metroid game with a modern coat of paint. We got a quick glimpse of the game in action and its cinematics during the presentation.

Alongside this announcement, Nintendo made it clear that Metroid Prime 4 is still in the works. That game was announced in 2017 and has faced some issues in that time. Per The Verge development on Metroid Prime 4 was “rebooted” in 2019 with Retro Studios now developing the game.

Metroid Dread is, at the time of writing, the subject of Nintendo’s post-Direct Treehouse presentation, so I’m sure we’ll have more details on this throwback title very soon.
