Final Fantasy VII Remake opened the show for Square Enix at their E3 2019 press conference. And what an opening.

A huge gameplay demo greeted a roaring crowd, showcasing not just how good this game looks, but also how combat will work. A true hybrid battle system, it combines hectic action with the more considered approach. Real-time combat appears to be the focus, but a more tactical approach is available to players who want to play that way.

The sight of Cloud and Barrett fighting off a huge Scorpion robot was exhilarating. Action was explosive and fast-paced, with the ability to switch between characters on the fly. Switching characters mid-battle looks to add an extra dynamic to how this game plays. Later in the presentation we got a quick look at how Tifa and Aerith will play too, much to the joy of fans in the room.

Speaking of which, the game will be playable on the E3 show floor, so expect to hear lots of opinions on the demo throughout this week.

It was also revealed that Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released episodically. The first game will be set in Midgar and appears to explore a lot more of the lore and world than the same section in the original release. It was said that Final Fantasy VII Remake will come on two Blu-ray discs. However, it’s unclear if that means this release or represents the multi-game rollout.

As revealed during the Final Fantasy VII Symphonic Reunion Concert, Final Fantasy VII Remake will release on March 3rd, 2020 on PlayStation 4.
