We finally know a little bit more about Marvel’s Avengers — the forthcoming, Crystal Dynamics game based on Earth’s mightiest heroes. The ‘Avengers War Table’ live stream last week gave us a further look at the story, the villains that players will face-off against and, most importantly, gameplay.

Marvel’s Avengers
is portioned off into distinct sections — Hero Missions (single-player) and War Zone missions (multiplayer). Hero Missions will progress the story and lead players into a battle with classic Marvel villain M.O.D.O.K, further separating this game from the MCU Avengers and doubling down on the original Marvel Comics source material. Players will also take on the mechanical menace of AIM (Advanced Idea Mechanics) and their robots, who are controlled by the aforementioned M.O.D.O.K — A.K.A George Tarleton.

In a walkthrough of what appeared to be an early part of the campaign, we got a glimpse at how Thor would play. A blend of heavy and light attacks, combined with the typical flight and lightning you would expect from the God of Thunder, Thor tore through an army of AIM robot foes with ease alongside A.I. partners Iron Man and Hulk. Without touching the controller it’s hard to say how the game actually plays, but what was shown appeared to lack the kind of impact you’d want from a character like Thor.

Later in the stream we were introduced to co-operative War Zone missions, these repeatable missions are drawn from a number of factions, including SHIELD and an Inhuman resistance group. It has a Destiny-esque feel to it and players will work to rebuild their own Chimera helicarrier not unlike your home base in The Division. It’s clear where Crystal Dynamics is pulling its influence from.

Gameplay-wise, War Zone missions will take place in much less linear environments and will give players the chance to suit up as their favoured Avenger with up to three friends. Whether you choose Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Miss Marvel, or Thor, you’ll be using your character with your specific abilities, gear and move loadouts, and your own cosmetics (costumes, emotes, and so on). Teaming up with friends will allow for big co-op finishing moves, the ability to buff stats and more.

There’s also plenty of customisation for players to get to grips with, including a range of differently-powered items to equip and a host of cosmetics to customise your favourite Avenger based on their appearances on screen and in the pages of classic comics.

Marvel’s Avengers is set to release on September 4th 2020 on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Players will also get a free next-generation upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions.

We’d love to know what you thought of this stream. Are you excited to play Marvel’s Avengers in September? Let us know in the comments.
